Chapter 66
âYouâve spent the most time with him, Poe,â Mathers said. âDo you think heâs up to this?â
Stahl and Bradshaw were in the bar. Stahl was buying himself a Coke and Bradshaw was making sure he didnât put Jack Danielâs in it.
âI have no idea,â Poe replied. âYou can see the improvement in him physically, but heâs been an alcoholic for years. He has to have psychological scars we donât yet know about.â
âIs he clean?â Mathers said.
âSays heâs on Antabuse, which Tilly says gives him an acute sensitivity to ethanol. Heâll basically get the worldâs worst hangover as soon as he takes a sip and thereâll be no hair of the dog â he wonât be able to drink it away. The more he has, the worse itâll get.â
âHow sure are we heâs taking it?â
âThereâs an easy way to find out,â Poe said.
âHow?â
âI could put a splash of vodka in his drink when he isnât looking.â
âThat would work,â Mathers nodded. âObviously Iâd have to immediately arrest you for unlawfully administering a noxious substance with intent to cause harm, but at least weâd know.â
âHe was joking, maâam,â Flynn said. âYou were, werenât you, Poe?â
Poe shrugged. âOf course,â he said. âLook, as long as we can keep him out of the bar for a few hours, we should be able to get him through this. Heâs not our problem after that. If heâs drunk, he doesnât get access.â
âGut view?â Mathers asked.
âI think heâs sober.â
âDI Flynn?â
âHeâs sober now. Whether he has the motivation to sustain it, I donât know. But Poeâs right, long-term sobriety is Stahlâs problem, not ours.â
Mathers tapped out an email. âWeâre on then,â she said. She threw her phone on the table and sighed. âCome on then â cards-on-the-table time. What do we thinkâs really happening here? Why did he ask for Stahl and what can we expect on Sunday?â
âI donât know,â Poe said. âHe doesnât smell like a goat any more, but I canât shake the feeling weâre about to tether him like one.â
